Y's Men Newsletter — January 4, 2007THURSDAY JANUARY 4Helene Weir, recently appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Westport Weston Family Y will speak about "Why the Y?” Ms. Weir's appointment is the culmination of a nationwide search conducted over a period of several months. Helene most recently served as Senior Vice President of Operations at Valley of the Sun YMCA in Phoenix AZ. A native of Canada, Helene has called the United States home since assuming the position of Vice President, Executive Director at Valley of the Sun YMCA in 2000. THURSDAY JANUARY 11Michael Hill is the general manager of IBM's global telecommunications industry and will speak about “Business Innovation and the Telecommunications Industry Challenge”. He is focused on helping IBM's telecommunications industry clients succeed in a converging ecosystem comprised of telecommunications, media and entertainment, IT and consumer electronics industries. Hill earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at the University of Florida. He is on the board of the Florida Foundation at the University of Florida. The hosts for January 11 will be Bob Curtis, Ed Fisher, Stan Groner and Joe Schachter. MEETING FACILITIESSetting up the chairs on January 4 will be Neil Coleman, Charlie Martinek, Fred Rosen and Stew Weisberg. On January 11 the chairs will be set up by Meredith Ewing, Carl Frey, Lou Rolla and Don Snook. MEETING CANCELLATION FOR SNOWIt has been decided that this year we will follow the Westport School snow closings for cancelling the Y's Men's meeting. If there is no school; there is no meeting. If there is a delayed school opening, there will be a regular meeting. The Y's Men's website will have the information posted by 7:30 a.m. the day of the meeting. BOARD MEETINGThere will be a meeting of the board on Thursday, January 4, at 8 a.m. in the Daniel's Room at the Saugatuck Congregational Church. TRIPS AND TRAVELJanuary 20 - Enjoy the music of Delisco, star of Smokey Joe's Café, at the Bridgeport Downtown Cabaret Theatre for the 5:30 matinee performance. THE BOOK CLUBThe Book Club will meet on Thursday, January 18 in the Seminar Room at the Westport Library at 1:30 p.m. The book will be "The Remains of the Day" by Kazuo Ishiguro. The author has lived in England since 1960. The book concerns the period just before WWII and an upper-class movement towards appeasement of Germany. The central character is the "perfect butler" and many will remember the movie starring Anthony Hopkins. Our discussion will be led by Tom Marshall. CAMERA CLUBThe first meeting of the New Year will be held on January 9. The two subjects will be; Improving your printing using profiles, and making better black & white pictures from color photos taken with your digital camera by Bill Balch. We'll move back to the Hall-Brooke Community Room at 47 Long Lots Road for this meeting.
