Bob Farr was re-elected to his 12th term as the representative for Avon, Farmington and West Hartford constituents. He is the Ranking Member of the General Assembly's powerful Judiciary Committee and is also a member of the Appropriations Committee. Representative Farr earned a BS degree in Engineering from the University of Connecticut and his Jurist Doctor from the University Of Connecticut School Of Law. He and his wife reside in West Hartford. THURSDAY, JANUARY 12Joseph Califano will speak on the topic "Inside: A Public and Private Life", which is the title of his new book. He is Chairman of the Board and President of The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University. CASA has a staff of more than 75, including 13 Ph.D.s, 20 Masters, and five lawyers. It conducts research and evaluation and mounts demonstration programs involving all substances (alcohol, illegal, prescription and performance-enhancing drugs, nicotine) at more than 100 sites in 45 cities and counties in 22 states. Mr. Califano was appointed Special Assistant to President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 26, 1965. In January 1977, Mr. Califano became Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare. Mr. Califano received his BA degree from Holy Cross and his LL.B., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School. He was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. STAPLES SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FAIR The Westport Science and Engineering Foundation will hold the annual Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday Feb 11 2006 at Staples HS. Over 70 contestants from 5 area high schools will compete and additional judges are needed. A background in any engineering discipline or the sciences including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy etc is required. TRIPS AND TRAVELFebruary 15 Join us for a trip to see Spamalot at the Shubert Theatre (225 W. 44 th St,). The trip includes the theatre, bus and driver tip. April 23-25 On our three day trip to Gettysburg, Antietam and Harpers Ferry, we will have guided tours of National Military and Historic Parks. We will visit Copenhagen, Tallin, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Stockholm, Visby, Sweden, Warnemunde (Berlin) and Arhus (Denmark). The cost is $3,909 per person for an outside cabin, includes air fare. It is a 10 day/9night trip on board Cruise West's "Spirit of Endeavour” (approximately 100 passengers). This is the same line that took us on our Columbia River trip last year. We will start in Ketchikan and go on to Metlakatla, Petersburg, Frederick Sound, Sitka, Glacier Bay, Skagway, Haines, and end in Juneau. CAMERA CLUB EVENTS Y's Men's Camera Club Second Annual Photo Exhibition continues at the Westport Center for Senior Activities through January 27th. The Camera Club has tutorials planned for January 10, February 7 and February 21. The subjects will be managing and enhancing photos, camera basics and how to set up that winning shot. The Jan. 10 session will be "Bare Bones" Elements, including organizing your digital images, resizing and cropping, quick fixes, saving and sharing (e-mailing), burning a CD, slide shows and "What is RAW?". The meetings will be in the Board Room of the "Y" from 10:00 A.M. 'til Noon.
