THURSDAY, JANUARY 19

Stephen M. Winter, MD is the Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Norwalk Hospital and is also Clinical Professor of Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care. He has volunteered at the HÔpital Albert Schweitzer in Haiti, been appointed as a Critical Care Team Leader by the American Red Cross for Operation Desert Storm, and been sent on missions with the relief organization AmeriCares. He will speak on the topic Modern Refugee Medicine; Looking for Camels in South Darfur . He helicoptered into lower Manhattan hours after the collapse of the World Trade Center towers to assist in the emergency response. Dr. Winter attended medical school at the University of Michigan and Cornell University. Dr. Winter lives in Ridgefield, Connecticut with his wife, Eva, and their two children, Meredith and James.

THURSDAY JANUARY 26

Laszlo Birinyi is the founder and president of Birinyi Associates, Inc. His topic will be the Outlook for 2006. His investment career began as a trader and culminated in the development of the trading calendar and eventually one of the premier books on stock market trading, The Equity Desk . He is a columnist for Forbes, was a panelist for Louis Rukeyser's Wall Street, and a frequent guest on CNBC. In 1999, Mr. Birinyi was inducted into the Wall Street Week Hall of Fame. Mr. Birinyi graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and from the New York University Graduate School of Business.

DONUT HOSTS

The donut hosts for January 19 will be John Freeman, Ted Jacques, Bill Killough and Carl Liba. On January 26 the hosts will be Walter Eads, Phil Lint, Tom Marshall and Ed Van Gelder.

JAN van LAER

As of January 20th Jan & Janet van Lear's new permanent address will be l802 Turban Court, Fort Myers, Florida, 33908. For the last 20 years Jan has been one of our most active and valuable members. He was president in 2000-01, speaker chairman, a 10 year Hoot Owl member, chairman of the donut hosts and the ski group several years, helped run both the tennis program and the Ancient Mariners one summer and founder biking clubs. We wish Jan and Janet good luck in their new home.

TRIPS AND TRAVEL

February 15 Join us for a trip to see Spamalot at the Shubert Theatre (225 W. 44 th St,). The cost is $123 which includes the theatre, bus and driver tip. Lunch is not included, but participants will be mailed a list of area restaurants. Arrangements can be made for group dining at a nearby restaurant for about $20 per person. April 23-25 On our three day trip to Gettysburg, Antietam and Harpers Ferry, we will have guided tours of National Military and Historic Parks.  On the final day, we will make some interesting stops near York, PA before heading home. May 21 Our Baltic cruise begins May 21.  It is a ten night cruise, 13 day total. We will visit Copenhagen, Tallin, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Stockholm, Visby, Sweden, Warnemunde (Berlin) and Arhus (Denmark). The cost is $3,909 per person for an outside cabin, includes air fare. September 6 Our cruise of Alaska's Inside Passage and Glacier Bay begins Sept. 6, 2006.  It is a 10 day/9 night trip on board Cruise West's "Spirit of Endeavour”  (approximately 100 passengers).  This is the same line that took us on our Columbia River trip last year.  We will start in Ketchikan and go on to Metlakatla, Petersburg, Frederick Sound, Sitka, Glacier Bay, Skagway, Haines, and end in Juneau.  The cost for AA outside cabin is $4,190 per person (double occupancy) including cancellation insurance.  Pick up full trip description at Travel Desk.  Contact Dave Kidney 227-7560.   

CAMERA CLUB EVENTS

Y's Men's Camera Club Second Annual Photo Exhibition continues at the Westport Center for Senior Activities through January 27 th. Internationally known fine art photographer and Westport resident, Larry Silver, will give a lecture and slide presentation at our January 24th meeting at the "Y" 10 AM to 12 Noon.  Larry will illustrate his 56 years of photography with examples of his work taken in New York, California, Westport and China.  This is an unusual opportunity to meet one of the today's leading photographers.

HOOT OWLS

The Hoot Owls will sing 2:30 p.m. January 18 at Laurel Gardens in Trumbull.
