Y'S MEN NEWSLETTER FEB 16, 2006THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 16Maxine Bleiweis has been the Director of Westport Public Library since 1998. She will speak on the topic New Directions for Libraries. For over 30 years, Maxine has been known for her innovative approach to building and running libraries. From her 6 years as Library Director in Suffield, CT to her 18 years as Library Director in Newington, CT. She has shared much of her learning with other professionals over the years by writing a highly touted book entitled Helping Business: The Public Library's Role in Community Economic Development and many articles. She has two daughters and lives in the Black Rock section of Bridgeport. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23Ordained as a Rabbi in 1973, Robert Orkand has been the Senior Rabbi of Temple Israel in Westport, a Reform Jewish congregation of over 900 families, since 1982. Prior to his arrival in Westport he served as an assistant rabbi at Temple Israel in Miami, Florida and as Rabbi of Temple Beth-El in Rockford, IL. Rabbi Orkand will speak about Religion in American Society. Rabbi Orkand has served as Chair of the Human Services Commission of the Town of Westport, as President of United Way of Westport-Weston, and as President of the Westport-Weston Clergy Association. Rabbi Orkand is married to Joyce and is the father of Seth, a graduate of Brown University and, presently, a student at Boston College Law School. TRIPS AND TRAVELMarch 22 - Join us on a day trip to Hartford to visit the Wadsworth Athenaeum and the State Capitol. The "Wadsworth" is America's oldest public museum (1842). The main attraction of our morning tour will be the traveling Rodin exhibition with 62 sculptures including his famous works The Kiss and The Thinker. Following the tour, we will have a delicious lunch at the Museum Cafe. After lunch, our bus will take us to the State Capitol where a tour has been scheduled. After the tour we expect to have time to sit in one or both legislative galleries and visit with one of our Fairfield County legislators. The cost is $66 per person. Contact Dave Kidney at 227-7560. April 23-25 On our three day trip to Gettysburg, Antietam and Harpers Ferry, we will have guided tours of National Military and Historic Parks. On the final day, we will make some interesting stops near York, PA before heading home. The cost is $425 per person, double occupancy, including insurance and seven meals. We will visit Copenhagen, Tallin, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Stockholm, Visby, Sweden, Warnemunde (Berlin) and Arhus (Denmark). The cost is $3,909 per person for an outside cabin, includes air fare. We are planning a local field trip in Westport/Weston for April 4 and a trip to Manhattan on May 9 – more information later.
