Speakers

MARCH 17

Professor William Abbott of Fairfield University will speak about "The Irish Experience in America, 1845-1920." He received a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of California at Berkeley in 1974, graduating summa cum laude Phi Beta Kappa. He then received a doctorate in modern British History in 1982 from Oxford . He was appointed an Assistant Professor of History at Fairfield University in 1985. In 2000 he was promoted to Associate Professor, after having served six years as the Department Chairman. This year he is teaching a new advanced seminar on Ireland since the Famine. He was a founding member of the Irish Studies program at Fairfield, and has also served on many faculty committees. He enjoys tennis, running, and orienteering. He regularly competes in local five-mile races and half-marathons.

MARCH 24

Lt. Col. John Whitford, Director of Communications, Connecticut National Guard will be our speaker. He enlisted in the Connecticut Army National Guard in August 1981 as a Private. He attended the CT Officer Candidate School at Camp O'Neill and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, Engineer Branch, in 1986. LTC Whitford has been a full-time member of the CTARNG since 1996 and has been the full-time State Public Affairs Officer for the CTNG since 1999. He received a BS in Communications from Southern Connecticut State University and a Master's degree in Education from Sacred Heart University. LTC Whitford resides in Norwich, Conn., with his wife Jean and his two step-sons.

DONUT HOSTS

The donut hosts for March 17 will be George Erickson, Dave Kidney, Tom McCaffery and Sal Porio. On March 24 the hosts will be Stan Adelman, Bob Allen, Ray Orr and Steve Raffel.

MEETING FACILITIES

Setting up the chairs March 17 will be Budge Atterbury, Harry Hannaway, Lee Jordan and Tom McCaffery. March 24 the chairs will be setup by Jack Gibbons, Neil Hardy and Ralph Levitan.

COMMUNITY THEATRE

Andy Wolfson has advised that the Westport Community Theatre will stage The Foreigner by Larry Shue. The play is “a constant invitation to laugh at the foolishness of life”. Y's Men are invited to a free dress rehearsal on Thursday, March 31st. Be there at 7:45 p.m. The show starts at 8 p.m.

TRIPS AND TRAVEL

April 1/4 – Tour Washington D.C. at Cherry Blossom Time. This 4-day tour will feature new venues such as the World War II Memorial, the National Air & Space Museum and the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian. May 3 – Go Behind the Scenes at the Bronx Zoo for an exciting guided tour. The cost of just $49 per person includes admission, guides, gourmet box lunch and transportation. Sold out but we are accepting stand-byes. Contact Elliott Netherton, 454-0489.

May 25 - Enjoy a day at the Belmont Racetrack. The price is $58 per person and includes admission, lunch in the Garden Terrace and transportation. Contact Norm Mason, 227-6233.

June 27/July 5 – Enjoy the Blue Danube River Cruise, a 9-day escorted tour by Collette Vacations, featuring Prague, Vienna and Budapest. The cost is $2,859 per person, double occupancy, including transportation from Westport. A $250 deposit is required to hold your reservation and brochures are available. HIKING

The hiking group meets at the Saugatuck Congregational Church parking lot at 10 a.m. Bud Martin (227-2448) should be contacted if you have any questions.

HOOT OWLS

The Hoot Owls will sing March 17 at the Westport Senior Center at 1:30 p.m. They will also sing March 24 the Greenfield Hill AARP.
