SPEAKERS

MARCH 31

United States Congressman, Christopher Shays, will speak about “Washington Update”. He advocates fiscally conservative and socially moderate views both in Congress and on the national stage, and is a frequent guest on political talk shows, including Larry King Live, Meet the Press and many others. Christopher was born in Darien in 1945. After finishing his studies at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois, he married his high school sweetheart, Betsi, and the two served together in the Peace Corps in Fiji from 1968 to 1970. He received his MBA from New York University. Christopher and Betsi live in Bridgeport and commute to Washington. Their daughter Jeramy works at the Environmental Law Institute.

APRIL 7

Karleen Lombard is the Director of Program and Volunteer Services for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Her presentation will provide a general overview of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, their history and mission, wish eligibility requirements, types of wishes granted, current wish statistics in Connecticut. She is responsible for training and overseeing a team of 300+ volunteers around the state and supervising our 2 wish coordinators on staff. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Last fiscal year, they granted 144 wishes in Connecticut.

DONUT HOSTS

The donut hosts for March 31 will be Ernie Arnow, Andy Popp, Tony Valenti and Dick Webb. On April 7 the hosts will be Roy Dickinson, Royal Graves, Barry McCabe and Jan Van Laer.

MEETING FACILITIES

Setting up the chairs March 31 will be Howard Aibel, Carl Liba, Charlie Martinek and Roy McKay. April 7 the chairs will be set up by Morton Feldman, Pete Goff, Neil Hardy and Bill Huber.

TRIPS AND TRAVEL

June 27/July 5 – Enjoy the Blue Danube River Cruise, a 9-day escorted tour by Collette Vacations, featuring Prague, Vienna and Budapest. The cost is $2,859 per person, double occupancy, including transportation from Westport. A $250 deposit is required to hold your reservation and brochures are available. September 16 – Visit the Goodspeed Opera House and enjoy the musical The Boy Friend, directed by Julie Andrews. The price of $89 per person includes show, motor coach and lunch at La Vita Gustosa. Contact Warren Rossell , 226-5357.

COMMUNITY THEATRE

Andy Wolfson has advised that the Westport Community Theatre will stage The Foreigner by Larry Shue. The play is “a constant invitation to laugh at the foolishness of life”. Y's Men are invited to a free dress rehearsal on Thursday, March 31st. Be there at 7:45 p.m. The show starts at 8 p.m.

BOARD MEETING

The regular monthly board meeting will be held Thursday, April 7, at 8:15 a.m. in the Daniel's Room. All members are invited to attend.

HIKING

The hiking group meets at the Saugatuck Congregational Church parking lot at 10 a.m. Bud Martin (227-2448) should be contacted if you have any questions.

HOOT OWLS

The Hoot Owls will sing March 31 at 3030 Park Ave in Bridgeport at 7:30 p.m. They will also sing April 5 at the Carolton Convalescent Hospital in Fairfield at 2:15 p.m.

HEARING ASSISTANCE SYSTEM

Jan Van Laer reports that the new Williams Sound hearing assistance system is installed, and it works great! This system enhances hearing for those who have trouble making out what our weekly guest speakers have to say. To see for yourself what a difference this makes, we will have a demo unit for you to try out every Thursday at the Trips and Travels table. Check it out!
