Y's Men Newsletter — Sept 14, 2006THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 21Eric Roitsch, former Captain with the US Special Forces, will talk about “The War on Terror.” Eric Roitsch recently concluded a highly successful career in the U.S. Army, with the majority of his service being in the elite 5th Special Forces Group. Roitsch was among the first of U.S. Force Packages to infiltrate into both Afghanistan and Iraq. He holds both Baccalaureate and Masters degrees in Business and is a graduate of the Army's Ranger School. He currently resides in Greenwich. THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 28Linda K. Froschauer, a resident of Westport, middle school teacher and K–8 Science Department Chair at the Weston Public Schools, is the President of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) . She will speak about “Searching for the next Sputnik”. Not since the launching of Sputnik has science education received the level of attention it is now experiencing. What are the challenges facing science education? How does the "flat" world impact students? Froschauer earned a BS degree in education from Northern Illinois University and an MA in science teaching from Governors State University. The hosts for September 28 will be Pat Cullen, George Erickson, Tom McCaffery and Burr McGhee. MEETING FACILITIESSetting up the chairs on September 21 will be Roger Curtis, Jon Fox, Carl Frey and Don Snook.. September 28 the chairs will be set up by Andy Lozyniak, Harry Nosser and Jim Sweeny. April 26-May 10, 2007 – Join us in Exploring Greece and its Islands , a 15-day escorted tour by Collette Vacations, featuring Mykonos, Santorini and classical Greece. Payment can be sent to Mike Belaga 196 Newtown Turnpike, Westport, CT 06880 or be paid at one of the next meetings. Make your check payable to the Y's Men of Westport/Weston. Our fiscal year runs from July to June, and the dues are now due for the 2006-2007 year. If you are over 90, contact Mike so he can waive your dues. Thanks for your cooperation in getting dues in early so we don't have to do a lot of follow-up. CAMERA CLUB The September 26 New York Botanical Garden – Chihuly field trip. is sold out. We have 31 paid-up reservations – a Club record. If you want more information about the Garden go to www.nybg.org . Our major event of the year – the Y's Men Camera Club Third Annual Photo Contest and Exhibition will have its gala opening on October 27 at 3:00 P.M. at the Westport Center for Senior Activities. The show will run through January 2, 2007. The major changes this year are; the maximum number of entries per person will be increased to three; and more awards will be made – a new category for photos taken more than 25 years ago by the entrant will be added. Entries will be accepted from September 14 until October 12. On October 31 Dave Pressler, one of our judges, will do a “walk-around the gallery, critiquing all of the photos on exhibit. Dave performed this valuable task for us in 2004. Finally, Camera Club membership dues are now due. The cost remains $15. Your dues make these exciting programs possible.
