Stuart Mathew “Mat” Gibson will talk about The Survival of Culture
in the Former Soviet Imperium: A Decade of Change, A Decade of Challenge. He
is an Independent Consultant, (UN Senior International Expert) promoting
non-profit cultural organizations and governments primarily in Central
Asia, Caucasus, Central Eastern Europe, Baltic, Balkans, the FSU,
China, and the Middle East through the introduction of enhanced management
skills and linkages with organizations in Western Europe and North
America. He is the Director, Hermitage UNESCO Project ( St. Petersburg,
Russia ) and an Advisor to the Ministry of Culture of Iraq.

Students Today – A College President's Perspective will
be the subject of Father Jeffrey von Arx's take. In July 2004, Rev.
Jeffrey von Arx, S.J., assumed the presidency of Fairfield University,
becoming the eighth Jesuit to hold the position since the institution's
founding in 1942. Born in Bellefont, Penn., Fr. von Arx grew up in
Locust Valley on the north shore of Long Island. He graduated from
Princeton University in 1969 and entered the Society of Jesus that
summer. He subsequently earned an M.A. and M.Phil. in history at Yale
University, and completed his Ph.D. there in 1980. A year later, Fr.
von Arx received an M.Div. from the Weston School of Theology and was
ordained a priest.

DONUT HOSTS
The donut hosts for October 6 will be Bob Curtis, Barry McCabe, Ray
Orr and Rick Towers. The hosts for October 13 will be Budge Atterbury,
Lee Jordan, John Luscombe and Steve Raffel.
MEETING FACILITIES
Setting up the chairs on October 6 will be Alden Harris, Carl Liba,
Harry Nossek and Frank Vener. October 13 the chairs will be set up
by Dave Kidney, Craig Matheson, Ed Van Gelder and Dick Webb.
October 5 Enjoy a day cruising the Thimble Islands
in Stony Point and touring the Gillette Castle in East Haddam. The
price is $72 per person and includes a buffet lunch at the Guilford
Tavern and a visit to the Lyman Orchards. There is one open position,

November 9 BROADWAY THEATRE BUS TRIP -- "SWEET
CHARITY" a sparkling revival of 1960 musical starring
Christina Applegate. Written by Neil Simon with music by Cy Coleman
and Dorothy Fields, featuring hit songs "Hey Big Spender" and "If
They Could See Me Now" Price: $94 per person which includes theatre,
bus and driver tip. Lunch is NOT INCLUDED, but participants will
be mailed a list of area restaurants with phone numbers. Contact: Warren

December 5 Begin your holiday season with the Radio
City Christmas Spectacular following a Christmas tour of New
York. Our guide form the Metropolitan Museum of Art will take us
to the World Financial Center's Palm Court, Wall Street, and see
many of the department store windows. Lunch will be at La Maganette
Restaurant. The price is $125 per person. Contact: Dave Kidney, 227-7560.
HURRICANE KATRINA
The Y's Men has made a contribution of $1,000 toward the Katrina relief.
The Salvation Army and the Sunrise Rotary each received $500. Additional
individual members contributed $475 to the Sunrise Rotary. Members
of Sunrise Rotary matched our gift so $1,950 is being sent to the Rotary
of New Orleans.
GOLF OUTING
There will be a Y's Men's Longshore golf outing on Wednesday, October
12 starting at 9 a.m. There should be prizes for low gross, low net,
longest drive and nearest to the pin. The fee to cover prizes will
be $5. Signup by emailing Jack Farrell (227-7341) at pen6dragon@aol.com or
at a meeting.
HIKING
Meet at the Saugatuck Congregational Church at 10 a.m. in the parking
lot if you would like to hike. Bud Martin 227-2448 can answer any questions.

October 20, Thursday Entries for the Second Annual Y's Men Photo Contest and
Exhibition accepted at the Y's Men meeting
October 25, Review photos take at
Bronx Zoo and Fall Foliage fieldtrip
The Hoot Owls will sing October 7 at the Greens at Cannondale at 2
p.m. They will also sing October 11 at 12:30 p.m. at the Norwalk Senior
Center.
YOUR DUES ARE DUE
This year the dues remain at $40. New members will pay $50. Payment
can be sent to Michael Stashower, 14 Cardinal Lane, Westport, CT
06880 or be paid at one of the next meetings. Make your check payable
to the Y's Men of Westport/Weston. Our fiscal year runs from July to
June, and the dues are now due for the 2005-2006 year. If you are over
90, contact Mike so he can waive your dues. Thanks for your cooperation
in getting dues in early so we don't have to do a lot of follow-up.
