THURSDAY OCTOBER 20

Three Westporters will talk about their experiences and observations staying with the kids at the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in Ashford, CT. The speakers will be Ken Bernhard, Dan Kail and Larry Weisman. All three men have been volunteer counselors at Paul Newman's renowned camp for children. The camp has been in existence for 16 years and is attended by children between the ages of 8 and 15 who suffer from chronic and life threatening diseases. This past summer, there were 9 weekly sessions and each child came for a week. Dan Kail has been volunteering at the camp for more than 10 years, Larry Weisman for more than 5 years and this was Ken Bernhard's first summer.

THURSDAY OCTOBER 27

Jeff Benedict is an award-winning investigative journalist, a lawyer, and the author of six books. He is a contributing writer for the Los Angeles Times and Sports Illustrated. His latest book – OUT OF BOUNDS: Inside the NBA's Culture of Rape, Violence and Crime – was published in June 2004 and reached the Amazon best seller's list within one week. He holds a J.D., an M.A. in Political Science and a B.A. in History. He will talk on the subject: Forensics in History, Casinos in Connecticut : Two Detective Stories.

DONUT HOSTS

The donut hosts for October 20 will be Roger Curtis, Mel Holson, Nat Magida, and Mike Stashower. The hosts for October 27 will be Bert Grossman, John Loynes, Bernie Perry and Reggie Vecchione.

MEETING FACILITIES

Setting up the chairs on October 20 will be Ernie Arnow, Jack Farrell, Peter Kolbrener and Jan van Laer. October 27 the chairs will be set up by Budge Atterbury, Bob Curtis, Lee Jordan and John Luscombe.

TRIPS AND TRAVEL

November 9 BROADWAY THEATRE BUS TRIP -- "SWEET CHARITY" a sparkling revival of 1960 musical starring Christina Applegate.  Written by Neil Simon with music by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields, featuring hit songs "Hey Big Spender" and "If They Could See Me Now" Price: $94 per person which includes theatre, bus and driver tip.  Lunch is NOT INCLUDED, but participants will be mailed a list of area restaurants with phone numbers. December 5 Begin your holiday season with the Radio City Christmas Spectacular following a Christmas tour of New York. Our guide from the Metropolitan Museum of Art will take us to the World Financial Center 's Palm Court, Wall Street, and see many of the department store windows. Lunch will be at La Maganette Restaurant. The price is $125 per person. Contact: Dave Kidney, 227-7560.

May 21 Our Baltic cruise begins May 21.  It is a ten night cruise, 13 day total. We will visit Copenhagen, Tallin, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Stockholm, Visby, Sweden, Warnemunde ( Berlin ) and Arhus ( Denmark ). The cost is $3,909 per person for an outside cabin, includes air fare. Contact Ed VanGelder 227-6120.

HIKING

Meet at the Saugatuck Congregational Church at 10 a.m. in the parking lot if you would like to hike. Bud Martin 227-2448 can answer any questions. Note that effective October 26 the hikes move to Wednesdays. The hikes below have been updated (dates reversed from the printed newsletter).

HOOT OWLS

The Hoot Owls will sing October 1 at the Darien Senior Center at 12:45 p.m. They will also sing October 25 at 3:00 p.m. at the United Church of Rowayton.

YOUR DUES ARE DUE

This year the dues remain at $40. New members will pay $50. Payment can be sent to Michael Stashower, 14 Cardinal Lane, Westport, CT 06880 or be paid at one of the next meetings. Make your check payable to the Y's Men of Westport/Weston. Our fiscal year runs from July to June, and the dues are now due for the 2005-2006 year. If you are over 90, contact Mike so he can waive your dues. Thanks for your cooperation in getting dues in early so we don't have to do a lot of follow-up.
