YOUR DUES ARE DUE

This year the dues are $50. New members will pay $60. Payment can be sent to Mike Belaga 196 Newtown Turnpike, Westport, CT 06880 or be paid at one of the next meetings. Good news. Through October 5th, dues have been paid by 240 of our 444 members. In past years considerable effort has been exerted by your Board to follow up with unpaid members. However, this has been a long term problem and it is felt that it is unfair to those who paid promptly and to the Board members that had to make phone calls to get payments. Therefore, in order to motivate slow payers, after November 15 there will be a late fee of $10 for dues. Further, if anyone has financial difficulty in paying his dues please contact either the Treasurer, Mike Belaga 454-2371 or the President Jon Fox 227-2679 for assistance.

NEWSLETTER

The Club spends 3600 $/year printing and mailing the biweekly news letter. Over 300 of our members have email addresses. If 200 of our members with email voluntarily accepted receiving the Newsletter by email, we could save over $1000/year. Mike Belaga emphasizes that anyone who does not have email or those with email who wish to continue to receive a hard copy "snail mail" may do so. We will be emailing a bulletin shortly to ask if you are willing to no longer get a mailed copy of the newsletter. To see what the newsletter on the website looks like, go to the website and on the home page click on "Latest Newsletter". Try printing the newsletter out if you prefer to read from a hard copy.

CAMERA CLUB

The Y's Men Third Annual Photo Contest and Exhibition will open with an awards ceremony and reception at the Senior Center on Friday, October 27 at 3:00 pm.  All Y's Men and Significant Others are welcome. On October 31 at 3:00 pm. One of the Contest judges will critique all of the photos in the Exhibition. This will be a good learning experience for all of us. On November 14 Dave Schafer will bring us up close and personal to flowers and bugs in an entertaining and educational talk about macro photography. The meeting will also include a critique of our Botanical Garden photos. The venue will be the Y Board Room at 10:00 am.

THE BOOK CLUB

The Book Club will meet on Thursday, October 19, at 1:30 p.m. in the Seminar Room (2nd floor) at the Westport Library. We'll discuss "The Known World", by Edward P. Jones. Copies are available--ask at the library for the Y's Men book. This novel was a 2003 Pulitzer Prize winner and is about slavery told from the view of slaves, as well as freedmen, some of whom became slave owners themselves. It's a powerful book based on history and dealing with the practical and moral effects. Neil Hardy will lead the discussion. All are welcome.

APPLE MACINTOSH OWNERS TAKE NOTE

As a minority in a world of PC owners, it would be nice if we Mac users could chit-chat with other Mac guys to resolve issues and learn more about our Macs. So we're starting a “Macintosh Round Table” to meet just a few times a year, and some very proficient fellows will counsel the rest of us. Sign up at a Thursday meeting or contact Joe Schachter at shachter@aol.com , or at 227-5802.

HOOT OWLS

The Hoot Owls will sing on Tuesday October 17 at the United Church of Rowayton at 12:45 pm. They will also sing on October 31 at the Greens at Cannondale at 3 pm. Rehearsals are every Thursday.
