Digital Photos

Use highest resolution possible if you intend to print any photo or view in slide show on your computer.

Keep spare rechargeable batteries on hand.

Use photo editor. Adobe Photoshop Elements or full blown Photoshop plus many other editors will perform basic jobs.

•  Rotate, if necessary
•  Crop
•  Adjust brightness with Levels command. Move sliding triangles to edges of histograms.
•  Fix red eye, bright reflections, skin blemishes, etc.
•  Resize: Make all images no wider than 740 pixels. Be sure to “Maintain Aspect Ratio” also referred to as “Constrain Proportions” so when you change the width the height changes proportionately.
•  Save. (Optional but recommended: Rename all files so as to identify them better and so all will line up in an alphabetical sort next to one another. i.e. Ymeeting022205a.jpg, etc. Some editors will do a batch rename of selected photos.)

Email photos to webmaster as attachments.

•  Check file sizes: all should be less than 200 kb.
•  In Outlook Express: Create Mail, address to wbalch@optonline.net , Subject: “Photos of (event or subject)”.
•  Click on Attachment icon (paperclip). If no icon, click on Insert/File attachment. Browse to your photo folder, select all photos for emailing, click Attach.
•  In body of message describe what you are sending.
•  Send.

Film photos – Printed photographs

Scan photographs – minimum resolution 72 dpi, maximum 150 dpi. Use .jpg format and keep glass platen spotless. Save all files to same folder and name with convention described above.

Follow suggestions above for digital photos from photo editing on down. Some scanner programs have dust and scratch removal functions – experiment with them if needed.

Film Photos – slide or negative film.

Professional photo firms will convert slides to digital images on a CD for about $0.40/slide or negative.

Or, use your own film scanner (preferred) or film scanning accessory on a flatbed scanner. Film scanner will run about $275 and up. Scan in batch mode at medium to high resolution since these small images will need to be enlarged.

The webmaster will take the attached photos in your email, save them to a temporary folder and decide if they will be displayed in full size or included in a gallery of photos accessed by clicking on thumbnail sized pictures. This involves special software that automatically resizes photos, creates thumbnails and builds multiple web pages.
