CONNECTICUT SUPREME COURT JUSTICE, JOETTE KATZ,
DECEMBER 8TH SPEAKER

Associate Justice Joette Katz of the Connecticut Supreme Court will address us Thursday, December 8. Her topic is "The Judicial Process: A View From The Bench."

Associate Justice Joette Katz is a native of Brooklyn, New York. She graduated from Brandeis University with a B.A. in 1974 and from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1977. She was admitted to the Connecticut bar that same year.

Justice Katz was in private practice from 1977 to 1978, after which she began her career as a public defender, serving first in the appellate unit of the Office of the Chief Public Defender (1978 to 1981) and then as an assistant public defender (1981 to 1983). She served as Chief of Legal Services, Public Defender Services, from 1983 until her appointment to the Superior Court bench in 1989. During her term as Chief of Legal Services, Justice Katz was a frequent lecturer on criminal law and appellate procedures. She taught at the University of Connecticut School of Law and is a co-author of Connecticut Criminal Caselaw Handbook: A Practitioner's Guide. She currently teaches at Quinnipiac on ethics and criminal law and at Yale on ethics.

Justice Katz became a justice of the Supreme Court in 1992. She was Administrative Judge of the Appellate System from Summer of 1994 to Spring of 2000. Additionally, Justice Katz is a former member of the Public Defender Commission, the Law Review Commission, the Drug Policy Study Committee, served on the Assisted Reproductive Technologies Committee and is former president of the Fairfield County branch of American Inns of Court. Justice Katz currently is chairperson of the Code of Evidence Oversight Committee as well as the Advisory Committee on Appellate Rules and the Client Security Fund Committee. Justice Katz is also a member of the American Law Institute and serves as a member of the Model Penal Code: Sentencing Project.
