NORTHEAST UTILITIES CHAIRMAN AND CEO, CHARLES SHIVERY

APRIL 13

Charles W. Shivery, chairman, president and chief executive officer of the Northeast Utilities (NU) system, will speak to the Y's Men of Westport/Weston on Thursday, April 13. His topic is    “ Connecticut Needs A Comprehensive Energy Policy.” The meeting begins at 10AM at the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East

He will talk about NU's active participation in the development of energy strategies that could allow the state to have more control over decisions that affect consumer costs for electricity. NU has recommended six actions that should be part of a comprehensive Connecticut energy policy, including its $3 billion investment in distribution and transmission over the next five years which is already under way, more than doubling conservation programs, and a hybrid energy supply market model that could include some utility-owned generation.

Shivery previously held the position of president and chief executive officer of NU Enterprises, Inc., the unregulated subsidiary holding company of the NU system, where he was responsible for the strategic growth and performance of NU's competitive energy businesses.

Shivery joined Northeast Utilities in 2002, having retired earlier that year as co-president of the Constellation Energy Group, parent company of Baltimore Gas & Electric (BG&E) and other energy-related businesses. He held numerous senior management positions at Constellation including: chairman, president and chief executive officer of Constellation Power Source; chairman and chief executive officer of Constellation Energy Source; president and director of Constellation Energy Solutions; director of Orion Power Holdings; and vice president, chief financial officer and secretary of BG&E. He joined BG&E in 1972 after four years in the U.S. Navy.

Shivery serves on the Connecticut Governor's Council on Economic Competitiveness and Technology. He is as a director of the Connecticut Business and Industry Association, Connecticut Center for Science and Exploration, Connecticut Children's Medical Center, Edison Electric Institute, Electric Power Research Institute, and Energy Insurance Mutual.

A native of Maryland's Eastern Shore, Shivery holds a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Engineering Science degree from The Johns Hopkins University. He earned a Master's of Business Administration from the University of Baltimore.
