NAVAL WAR COLLEGE PROFESSOR, JONATHAN POLLACK

EAST ASIA, NOVEMBER 2 ND

Jonathan D. Pollack, Professor of Asian and Pacific Studies and Chairman of the Asia-Pacific Studies Group at the U.S. Naval War College, will speak at the weekly meeting of the Y's Men of Westport/Weston on Thursday, November 2 nd . . His talk is titled " American Strategy In East Asia: Where Is It Headed? " The meeting begins at 10AM at the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East.

Between 2000 and 2004, Pollack served as Chairman of the College's Strategic Research Department, overseeing faculty recruitment, strategic planning, and research coordination, with particular attention to maritime strategy and regional political-military analysis.

Dr. Pollack's major research interests include Chinese national security strategy; U.S-China relations; East Asian international politics; Chinese policy making; U.S. foreign policy and defense strategy; Korean politics and foreign policy; and East Asian technological and military development. He often briefs U.S. government departments and agencies on these issues, and also interacts extensively with government officials and policy analysts across East Asia. In addition, he is a regular media contributor in the U.S. and abroad, including numerous op-eds and strategic commentaries.

After completing his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan, Dr. Pollack was a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard University. He then joined the Rand Corporation, where he served in various research and management capacities, including as Chairman of the Political Science Department and Corporate Research Manager for International Policy. In the latter capacity, he was responsible for strategic planning, corporate development initiatives, quality control and technical review of publications, and direction of a major interdisciplinary research department. Dr. Pollack has taught strategic studies, East Asian international relations, and Chinese security and foreign policy at Brandeis University, the Rand Graduate School of Policy Studies, UCLA, and the Naval War College. He is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Committee on International Security and Arms Control, a standing committee of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Pollack is presently completing a major project on crucial strategy and policy issues facing the United States in the Asia-Pacific region, drawing on the results of three international conferences that he organized at the War College. The publications include: Strategic Surprise? U . S .-China Relations in the Early 21 st Century (2004) ; Korea-The East Asian Pivot (2006); and Asia Eyes America: Regional Perspectives on U.S. Power (forthcoming, 2007). In addition to publishing numerous reports, research monographs and edited volumes, he contributes regularly to leading professional journals in the United States and Asia, and has written numerous chapters for major volumes on China's international strategies, the Chinese policy making process, East Asian international politics, and U.S. foreign policy.
