ALAN NEVAS

ABOUT JUDICIAL ACTIVISM

 

United States District Judge and Westporter, Alan H. Nevas, will speak at the weekly meeting of the Y's Men of Westport/Weston on Thursday, January 18th. His talk is titled, "Judicial Activism: Is It Good Or Bad?” The meeting begins at 10AM at the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East.

Judge Nevas, a Stamford native, graduated from Syracuse University in 1949 and from N.Y.U. Law School in 1951. After service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he practiced law in Westport with the firm of Nevas and Nevas until 1981, when he was appointed U.S. Attorney for Connecticut by President Ronald Reagan. In 1985, President Reagan appointed him as a U.S. District Judge.

During the years that he practiced in Westport, he served as Chairman of the Board of Finance and as a member of the Library Board. In 1970, he was elected State Representative from Westport to the Connecticut General Assembly. In 1972, he was named Deputy House Majority Leader and in 1974 was named Deputy House Minority Leader. In a 1976 poll of the membership of the General Assembly conducted by Connecticut Magazine, Judge Nevas was named one of the ten most outstanding members of the Assembly.

Judge Nevas has served as an officer and director of the Jewish Home for the Elderly of Fairfield County and as a trustee of Norwalk Hospital. He served a two-year term as President of the Federal Judges Association from May 1997 to May 1999. He is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association and is a Fellow of both the Connecticut and American Bar Foundations.

His other Westport civic and political affiliations over the years include Chairman, Board of Finance; Director, Westport National Bank; Westport Library Board of Trustees and United Fund Board of Directors.

Judge Nevas and his wife, Janet, live in Westport and have three children, Andrew, Debra and Nathaniel.
