YALE UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR OF OPHTHAMOLOGY

M. Bruce Shields, M.D., Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, at Yale University, will speak at the weekly meeting of the Y's Men of Westport/Weston on Thursday, March 29th. In his talk titled, "Through the Eye of the Artist”, he will review the major causes of visual impairment as seen through the eyes of prominent artists over the ages, as well as provide an update on treatments and prevention of blindness from these disorders. The meeting begins at 10 AM at the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East.

Dr. Shields completed his ophthalmology residency at Duke University and a glaucoma fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He subsequently joined the faculty at Duke in 1974 and was appointed Professor of Ophthalmology in 1984. In 1996, he became the Marvin L. Sears Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at Yale University School of Medicine. He served as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Science at Yale University from 1996 through September of 2006.

Dr. Shields has published 8 books. His Textbook of Glaucoma is in its fifth edition and has been translated into Spanish, German, Japanese and Portuguese and his Color Atlas of Glaucoma has been translated into Chinese. He has also written 30 chapters in other books and has over 160 papers in refereed journals. He has given 40 named lectures, served as visiting professor at over 50 universities, and has been a guest speaker at 139 meetings in the United States and 31 outside the U.S.

Dr. Shields has served as President of the American Glaucoma Society and the North Carolina Ophthalmological Society and as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Ophthalmology, the Glaucoma Committee of the National Society to Prevent Blindness, and the Glaucoma Program Committee of ARVO. He has served on several committees of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Residency Review Committee for Ophthalmology and the American Board of Medical Specialties.
