DAN WOOG
SPEAKS TO THE Y's MEN ON JANUARY 10th
On Thursday, January 10th, Dan Woog, Westport native and prize-winning journalist, will speak to the Y's Men of Westport/Weston. He will speak about his book, " Staples High School : 120 Years of A+ Education" The meeting begins at 10AM at the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East .
Westport native Dan Woog is a prolific author, well known newspaper columnist and prize-winning journalist. "Staples High School: 120 Years of A+ Education" -- a history of the high school he graduated fom in 1971, and where he now serves as the varsity boys soccer coach -- is the most recent of his 15 books. Other book topics include sports, popular culture and politics.
"Woog's World," his column on local people, places and trends, has appeared every Friday in the Westport News since 1986. In a poll conducted by the Fairfield Weekly, Woog was named "Best Columnist" in Fairfield County .
His articles have appeared in the New York Times, Sports Illustrated and USA Today. He currently writes "The OutField," a sports column that appears in newspapers nationwide. As a contributing editor with Soccer America magazine, he won 10 national writing awards from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
Woog is a fulltime freelance writer. His corporate clients include Monster.com and Tauck World Discovery.
In 2003, Woog became only the third boys varsity coach in the Staples boys soccer program's long history. He spent more than 25 years coaching prior to that, as a Staples assistant and with the Westport Soccer Association -- an organization he helped found in 1975. His WSA teams won 12 state championships, and reached the U.S. Region I finals twice. In 1991 he was named National Youth Coach of the Year, and in 2000 was inducted into the Connecticut Soccer Hall of Fame.
Woog is a member of both the Westport Youth Commission and TEAM Westport , the town wide diversity organization. He is a graduate of Brown University .
