ROBERT H. PATTON

AUTHOR AND GRANDSON OF GENERAL GEORGE S. PATTON

On Thursday April 3rd, Robert H. Patton, author and grandson of general George S. Patton, will address the Westport/Weston Y's Men. He will share with us stories and observations about his famous grandfather and tell us about his newest book, Patriot Pirates. The meeting begins at 10AM at the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East .

Robert H. Patton holds degrees in literature and journalism from Brown University and Northwestern University . In an early career he's described as one that “might charitably be called fluid,” Patton worked as a Capitol Hill reporter, a commercial fisherman, and a small-town real estate developer before publishing his family memoir, The Pattons: A Personal History of an American Family , to wide acclaim in 1994.

Chronicling five generations of Patton forebears culminating in the controversial and colorful figure of the author's grandfather, General George S. Patton, Jr., The Pattons was called “a compelling narrative full of delicious characters” by The New York Times and rated one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post .

Patton has since produced two well-regarded literary novels, Up, Down & Sideways and Life Between Wars . In May 2008, Pantheon Books will publish his history of Revolutionary War privateering, Patriot Pirates . Termed “a pleasing mixture of high-seas adventure and shrewd analysis” by Kirkus Reviews, the book is a spring selection of The History Book Club and the subject of a forthcoming cover story in American History magazine.

Patton, his wife Vicki, and their four sons live in Darien , CT.
