RICHARD FATHERLY BROADCASTER AND MEDIA-MAN OCTOBER 16th
On Thursday October 16th, Richard Fatherly, broadcaster and media-man, will address the Westport/Weston Y's Men. The title of his presentation is “Radio's Revolution”. He will provide us with an overview of a radio group's reaction to the advent of television in the early 1950's and its impact on reshaping radio programming in the United States . The meeting begins at 10AM at the Saugatuck Congregational Church, 245 Post Road East . Fatherly is a Darien , Connecticut native, and was recruited in 1964, from his programming post in New Haven , to join the Storz Broadcasting Company of Omaha , Nebraska . Storz Broadcasting pioneered what has become known as the “Modern Radio” movement. Following its creation of the Top40 radio format it became one of the most profitable privately owned radio groups. Fatherly's role began as Director of Production at Storz' KXOK in Saint Louis for 3 1/2 years, followed by his appointment as Program Director of its flagship WHB in Kansas City from 1967 through 1968. He retired from broadcasting in 1990 and remains active in the media business as a freelance writer, commercial announcer-narrator, and production consultant. He was named one of the nations top radio personalities in 1993 by Billboard , and inducted into the Saint Louis Radio Hall of fame in 2006. He resides in Kansas City . The Y's Men is an organization of about 450 retired and semi-retired men who live in Westport or Weston. They meet every Thursday morning from September to May, participate in a variety of activities from tennis and bowling to bridge and investments and volunteer in many worthwhile causes from Meals on Wheels to the Red Cross.
